Here are two ways you can multiply. I posted these two because they seem to be my student's favorite ways. I have even more ways you can multiply if you email me. Let me know and I will send you those as well.
The Box:
*14 x 56
*Create a box for the numbers to fit around. Write one number on top and the other on the right hand side.
*Draw diagonals from the corner of the boxes
* Start with the ones values. 4 x 5 is 20...the 2 goes in the top triangle and the 0 in the bottom triangle.
*Then move to 4 x 6, that's 24. Write it the same way
* Now move to 1 x 5. That's 5...05 (need the zero to hold the place value)
*Repeat with 1x6
*Add the diagonals and write that value below them. Your answer forms along the left and bottom!
Here's another example:
Traditional: This is the same way your parents learned in school.
Here's another example:
**If your multiplication problem has multiple zeros there's a short cut! 20 x 40..first multiply 4x2, that equals 8. Now just write the two zeros at the end and you have your answer!! 20 x 40= 800
