Addition and Subtraction

Addition: Combining amounts to create a sum

Most of our students use the traditional method for addition

Start with the ones 4+1=5. Move to the tens 9+7=16...write down the 6 and carry the 10. Now move to the hundreds, 5+2+1=8.

For nontraditional methods please email me and I will gladly send examples to you!

Subtraction: the inverse (opposite) of addition...finding the difference between numbers

Here's the traditional method of stacking.

Follow the same pattern as addition and start with the ones. Since you can't do 2-5, you must borrow from the hundreds.
